Every fibre optic cable has to end somewhere — and how it is terminated determines signal loss, reliability and the cost of future changes. The three most common methods are fusion splicing, mechanical splicing and field-installable connectors.

Fusion splicing joins two fibres by melting them together in a precision machine, producing the lowest loss and the most durable joint. Mechanical splicing aligns fibres inside a sleeve — faster, but with higher loss. Field-installable connectors suit small jobs where a splicing machine is not practical.
